Oral health plays a pivotal role in the well being of the soldiers. During the process of medical examination of candidate’s, oral examination plays an important role in determining the candidate’s basic dental anatomy, occlusion and alignment of upper teeth with the lower teeth. The very first thing is to check the no. of teeth and counting of dental points. let’s explain the each component in brief :-

  1. Condition of teeth: Your teeth must be fit for swallowing and in firm state and must be free from dental caries, decay tooth.
  2. Condition of Gums : The condition of Gums should be healthy and pink in color. so, it is advised to the candidates that they must visit dentist for scaling of teeth before appearing for initial medical examination.
  3. Prosthetic treatment :- It includes removable dentures, fixed crowns, dental implants, or bridge if any are considered fit but exclude the criteria of minimum 14 dental points.
  4. Orthodontics treatment :- The candidates who has braces, retainers, ortho appliances for malocclusion that includes overbite, deep bite, overjet of teeth may be considered temporarily unfit and they are referred to concerned orthodontist at service hospital for appeal medical board.
  5. Any other oral deformity that includes ulceration, gingivitis, periodontist are considered unfit at initial medical examination and these cases are more likely to be opined by the concerned specialist.

Candidates with fluorosis/yellowish teeth in dental examination at army/Airforce/Navy

Excessive fluoride found over the enamel surface of candidate’s is a common phenomenon among the people who belong to Rajasthan/ haryana or western belt of country. so, this may be due to excess fluoride found in the water contents. however, the candidate need not to worry about yellowish color of tooth surface and shouldn’t immediately jump for veneering treatment or cleaning tooth. hence he/she is fit in dental exam.

How to do numbering of permanent teeth in DentalExamination

The two types of teeth exist in the oral cavity that includes :

(i) Anterior Teeth – It consists of incisors and canines. Each incisor, first canine and second premolar has a value of one point considered their opposite teeth are found functional.

(ii) Posterior teeth- It consists of Pre molars and molars. Each first and second molar and third molar if present shall have a value of two points considered their opposite teeth are found functional. if third molar is not erupted fully may be given one point only.

Notes:- Don't get confused and just count the upper jaw teeth and if you found 16 teeth are present and in good occlusion state with the corresponding teeth in lower jaw, you will reach with 20 dental points and still you are 06 dental points ahead of minimum required criteria.

Candidates with dental caries and incomplete RCT

If a candidate is found with dental caries, cavity, decay tooth or incomplete root canal treatment, he/she will not be given dental point for the said tooth. so, cavity if any may please be filled with restoration and same with rct. however, the candidates are not unfit but they are going to lose dental points.

Candidates with supernumerary tooth in dental examination

in an exceptional case, candidate may have an extra tooth i.e. more than 32 teeth. so, in this case, candidate is not given any dental point but however he is fit in dental examination.

Candidates with artificial dentures/Implants

During the process of dental examination, candidates who are found with flexi dentures/ artificial dentures are not given dental point. however permanent tooth like implant may be given dental point if it is secured with crown/cap.

Cleaning of teeth/ scaling or polishing of Teeth for dental examination in NDA/CDS/IMA/Soldier’s

Candidates are advised to get an appointment for scaling of teeth in case of calculus, stains or bad odor before dental check up. Henceforth, It is advisable to candidate that they should not waste their money on oral prosthesis like polishing, veneering of teeth etc. A candidate should only make an appointment for cleaning/scaling of teeth. Even the recruiting medical team of IAF/Army/Navy understand the fact very well that you have cleared the entrance exam, SSB , interview and declaring a candidate unfit on the ground “calculus/deposits” is seem to be ridiculous.

Braces/Aligner’s during medical examination

Candidates found in the possession of braces, aligners, or undergoing any dental treatment are declared temporally unfit and these candidates are referred to orthodontist for the opinion in the appeal medical exam. If a candidate is likely to complete the treatment by the date of his joining training center and if orthodontist feels that existing treatment is not going to hamper the training schedule, he/she is considered fit.

Dental Unfitness and Malocclusion in Airforce/Army/Navy

Dental malocclusion is the abnormal alignment between the upper and lower teeth when they come in contact. Criteria for selection of candidate in case of malocclusion depends upon the severity of malocclusion. If the malocclusion is not affecting the mastication, phonetics, speech issues, oral hygiene, the candidates are considered fit. Malocclusion is categorized into three classes such as

Class I Malocclusion: Teeth are found in crowded state and in some cases, spacing may be found between the adjacent tooth. However, bite is normal.

Class II Malocclusion : Teeth are found clearly misaligned such as deep bite, overbite may found during oral examination

Class III Malocclusion : The maxillary teeth may overlap the mandibular teeth due to which pain and even eating becomes difficult.

  • Henceforth, the candidates with malocclusion are considered unfit at early stage of medical examination and will be given medical unfitness certificate/ Red card for further evaluation in Designated service hospitals.

Post facial surgery and selection of candidate in NDA

Past history of candidates such as mouth ulcer, swollen gums, any lesion that is suspected to be reoccurred is considered during oral examination. Candidate who has undergone facial surgery within six months of medical testing is considered unfit and if it is more than six months with no deformity and functionally ok may be considered fit .
